From College Dropout to Graduate: Forging Your Inner Diamond

Diamonds naturally transform deep within Earth. But only after being exposed to extremely high temperature and pressure. Similar enough in life, we all go through that process of transformation. We go through all sorts of pressures, stress, and experiences that shape us into who we are today to become the best versions of ourselves. When we go through life, we are forging our own inner diamond. Speaker, immigrant, and national award-winner Tevin Ali shares his inspirational journey of how he overcame being a college dropout to becoming a first-generation college graduate.

Through this inspiring keynote Tevin shares his personal story and the challenges he overcame as a first-generation college student coming from a low-income and immigrant background to become a success story. Since overcoming his challenges Tevin has been featured in national media such as The New York Times and The US News & World Report for his commitment towards empowering others. Tevin hopes to inspire students to overcome their own personal adversities, barriers, and self-doubt by sharing the elements that led him to success in his journey. Tevin relays that anyone can transform from a piece of coal to an unbreakable diamond with the right mix of elements that will forge one into who they are meant to become.

The Might of A Mission

One of the most common questions we get asked as kids is “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a college student that common question then becomes “what is your major?” As if we are limited to becoming or being defined by one thing.  It’s time to rewrite the narrative and ask more impactful questions such as “Who are you? What is your mission? Who do you hope to be? And what kind of impact do you want to have on others?”

We all have dreams and things we desire, and off course we all want that dream job, dream house, dream car, and dream life. But sometimes we get so caught up in what we want to have, that we lose sight of who we hope to be. Dig a bit deeper inside and ask yourself who do you hope to be and what impact do you want to have on others. Tevin believes a strong key to success is identifying and honing in on one’s personal mission. This talk will open up an engaging discussion and guide for students to explore their stories, their motivation, and how to strategize in unlocking their why and the leader within.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

  • what is a personal mission and how to craft their own personalized mission

  • why it’s crucial to reflect on one’s identity, especially when it feels uncomfortable

  • how to apply top fundamental leadership skills that will inspire action in themselves and those around them leading to positive change
